Mr. MacKeown has been with Panhandle ISD for eight years as a coach and history teacher and
is now embracing his leadership role as principal with enthusiasm. Having spent most of his
professional career in Panhandle, he holds a deep connection to the town and its students, whom
he genuinely loves. In his transition from teacher to principal, he maintains a student-centered
approach, prioritizing an environment where all students feel accepted and valued. His primary
goal is to ensure that every student has at least one adult who genuinely cares about them and to
create a school culture that breaks down cliques. He wants to see students from all
areas—whether in athletics, band, or other groups—come together and build a sense of unity
across different interests.
The principal's leadership philosophy is informed by his experiences as a coach. He believes in
trusting his team, whether it’s students or teachers, to perform their best. This approach mirrors
the hands-off management style he used while coaching, allowing people the freedom to excel
without micromanagement. He describes his leadership as “laissez-faire,” focused on fostering
an environment where individuals are motivated by their own character and desire to succeed.
The principal emphasizes treating people with respect, believing that doing so will naturally lead
to excellence as students and staff will want to perform their best.
Although he cherishes his new role, the principal acknowledges the challenges that come with it,
particularly the loss of day-to-day interactions with students. Previously, as a teacher and coach,
he enjoyed a closer bond with students, spending multiple class periods or hours in athletics with
them. Now, much of his work involves interacting with adults rather than students, which has
been an adjustment for him.
Nonetheless, the principal is committed to being approachable for students and faculty alike,
hoping that his familiarity with the students will make him relatable and accessible. Mr.
MacKeown is optimistic about his ability to impact the school positively, trusting in the strength
of Panhandle’s community and the good nature of its students and teachers to make his tenure a
success.
