Hello Panther Nation!
My name is Dr. John Sherrill and I am thrilled to be the new superintendent of Panhandle ISD. My wife, Amber, and I have five children - ranging from 1st to 7th grade. We are thrilled to be in Panhandle because it is a community of values, hard work, and integrity. That is an ideal place for kids to grow up, mine and yours.
I have been in education for 16 years and have served in administrative roles for the past eleven. Prior to coming to Panhandle, I was the high school principal in Archer City for four years and Marfa three years before that. I was a campus administrator in Southside (San Antonio) Independent School District for two years and I began my teaching career in Johnson City ISD where I taught CTE and history courses and coached. In a small school, you coach almost everything but I was the head coach in Tennis. Honestly, my favorite thing to coach was junior high basketball. Great sport and a great age! Later, I was promoted to the elementary where I was the Special Programs Coordinator and the district’s English as a Second Language (ESL) coordinator.
During my tenure in education, I have experience with educational leadership and administration, special education and 504, program evaluation, dual credit coursework to name a few. In a previous district, we received national recognition for safety/culture and effective instruction in every class. In 2023, I was honored to be selected to the Raising School Leaders program where I spent a week with other administrators across the world to learn from the best at Harvard University. I have a Ph.D in Curriculum and Teacher Education from Texas Tech as well as a Masters in Education from Texas Tech. Guns up!
As the new superintendent in Panhandle, I look forward to getting to visit with our staff, students, parents, and community members. There have been great successes in PISD in the past and we look to honor that tradition as we step towards greater tomorrows. Please feel free to visit or reach out. On behalf of my family, we are thrilled to be Panthers and look forward to meeting you!
